New member, Roger Carswell has been in touch to let us know about a successful piece of barbel angling on the Severn, during the last week of the season. Living in Shropshire, the Severn is Rogers’ local river and he has fished it for over fifty years! Below, Roger outlines his last-week success, in spite of the consistently poor weather and low temperatures that were more suited to January than mid-March.
“The end of this season has been the worst I’ve known for several years for barbel fishing. Water temperatures have remained very low and as I am sure most anglers know, this is not conducive to good barbel fishing. By the end of last season, we were seeing water temperatures of around nine degrees Celsius, but this year four or five was about as good as it got. However, the last week of the season saw a brief climb in water temperatures when they hit seven degrees Celsius and I managed a few barbel from Wroxeter. My best fish was 9lb 6oz and was part of a four fish catch taken on the last Friday of the season on maggot feeder. Roll on summer – and hopefully some warmer weather!”

Being retired, Roger, by his own admission, is lucky enough to be able to fish almost whenever he likes and says he is now looking forward to trying his hand on some of the other stretches of the Severn on the Lymm AC card. Good luck, Roger, we look forward to the results!
